Reading lab reports is an important step in the CBD purchasing process. Similar to reading the nutrition facts and ingredients at the grocery store, CBD lab reports, also referred to as certificates of analysis (COA), can tell you what exactly is contained in that specific product. Below are some very basic guides as to how to read different profiles on lab reports.
Cannabinoid Profile
The cannabinoid profile is the most commonly offered screening, and it displays the cannabinoid content levels for that product. Cannabinoids are the cannabis-derived compounds that can provide various therapeutic properties. Cannabinoids include the well-known CBD and THC, as well as lesser-known molecules like CBG and CBC.
A full spectrum product will contain a wide range of cannabinoids including THC:
Essentials By Savage 300mg Full Spectrum CBD Lotion
A broad-spectrum product will contain a wide range of cannabinoids present, without Delta-9 THC, which would be marked as “ND” meaning “none detected”:
Green Roads 350mg CBD Oil
An isolate-based product contains only CBD:
JustCBD 550mg Hemp Seed Oil Tincture
Terpene Profile
Terpenes are the aromatic oils found in cannabis, and they can each provide health benefits. The terpene profile will say which terpene and how much of it is present in the given product.
HUGS 300mg Broad Spectrum CBD Gummies
Heavy Metals Profile
Hemp plants are hearty and can soak up a lot from the soil that they are in. The heavy metals profile shows you which metals were tested for and how much of it is present in the product. As long as the lab results read “PASS” or “ND”, the levels are in a range that is safe.

Other profiles include testing for microbiology, mycotoxins, and pesticides. These are fairly straightforward in confirming the product is free from them, but if you are interested in learning more, check out the following links:
